Formula used
Tip is conventionally calculated on the pre-tax bill amount, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity — on a typical bill the difference is small.
Example calculation
A bill of 84.50 with an 18% tip, split between 2 people:
Tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21. Total = 99.71. Each person pays 49.86.
How much should you tip?
Tipping norms are cultural, not mathematical. In the United States, 15–20% at restaurants is standard because service wages assume it; 18% has become the common default. In much of Europe, 5–10% or rounding up is generous since service is often included; in Japan and South Korea, tipping can even be considered impolite.
The mental math is easy once you anchor on 10%: move the decimal point one place left, then scale — double it for 20%, add half for 15%. For quality of service, adjust the percentage rather than agonizing over the exact amount.
