Formula used

Annual = Hourly × Hours/week × Weeks/year

And in reverse: Hourly = Annual ÷ (Hours/week × Weeks/year). Monthly = Annual ÷ 12; Weekly = Annual ÷ weeks; Daily assumes a 5-day work week. All figures are gross (before tax).

Example calculation

Worked example

25/hour at 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year:

Annual = 25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 → 4,333/month, 1,000/week, 200/day. In reverse, a 52,000 salary works out to exactly 25/hour at full-time hours.

Why convert between hourly and annual pay?

Job offers, freelance rates and payroll all express pay differently — one employer quotes an annual package, another an hourly rate, a client a day rate. Converting them to the same unit is the only way to compare offers fairly.

The conversion depends on your real working pattern. A quoted "annual equivalent" that assumes 52 paid weeks overstates income for contractors who take unpaid time off. Freelancers should also remember that an employee's salary includes paid leave, benefits and employer taxes, so a fair freelance hourly rate is typically 30–50% higher than the salary-derived hourly figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours per week, then by working weeks per year. At full time (40 × 52), simply multiply the hourly rate by 2,080. So 20/hour ≈ 41,600/year.

What is 50,000 a year per hour?

At 40 hours/week and 52 weeks/year: 50,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ 24.04 per hour. If you work 45-hour weeks, your effective rate drops to about 21.37 per hour.

Is this before or after tax?

All figures here are gross — before income tax, social security and other deductions. Take-home pay depends on your country's tax system; see our income tax calculator for an estimate.

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Subtracting typical public holidays and leave, most full-time employees actually work about 1,880–1,950 hours.
