Formula used
Rates are mid-market reference rates published by the European Central Bank (updated every business day around 16:00 CET) via the open Frankfurter API. The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices — the fairest benchmark for any conversion.
Example calculation
If the rate is 1 USD = 83.20 INR, then 100 USD = 100 × 83.20 = 8,320 INR.
If your bank offers only 81.50, their margin is (83.20 − 81.50) ÷ 83.20 ≈ 2% — that's their fee, even if the transfer is advertised as "zero commission".
How do exchange rates work?
An exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in another, set continuously by the global foreign exchange market. The mid-market rate — what you see on Google and in this converter — is the midpoint between what buyers pay and sellers receive at any moment.
Consumers rarely get the mid-market rate. Banks, card networks and money changers add a margin (typically 1–4%) plus sometimes fixed fees. Knowing the reference rate lets you calculate exactly how much any provider is charging you, which is the key to choosing the cheapest way to send or spend money abroad.
Why use this calculator?
- Get the honest mid-market rate before exchanging money, so you can spot bad deals instantly.
- Price international purchases, freelance invoices and travel budgets in your home currency.
- See both directions of the rate (e.g. USD→INR and INR→USD) to double-check any quote.
Frequently asked questions
Are these exchange rates live?
Rates are official reference rates published by the European Central Bank once every working day (around 16:00 Central European Time), fetched live when you convert. They're ideal benchmarks for planning; intraday market rates fluctuate slightly around them.
Why is my bank's rate different from this one?
Banks and exchange services add a margin to the mid-market rate — usually 1–4% — which is how they profit even on "commission-free" transfers. Compare their offered rate to the mid-market rate here to see the true cost.
What is the cheapest way to convert currency?
Generally: specialist online transfer services and multi-currency cards offer rates closest to mid-market, followed by card payments abroad (choose to pay in local currency, never your home currency), with airport kiosks and hotel desks the most expensive.
Why isn't my currency listed?
The converter covers the ~30 currencies published in the ECB reference set, which includes all major and most heavily traded currencies. More currencies and sources are planned.
