Formula used
The count is in whole days from midnight to midnight, so "1 day to go" means the event is tomorrow. Months are approximate (average month = 30.44 days); the exact figure is always the day count.
Example calculation
Today is 25 July and your exam is 1 October: 6 remaining July days + 31 (Aug) + 30 (Sep) + 1 = 68 days to go — about 9.7 weeks. If you plan 2 hours of study daily, that's ~136 hours of prep time.
Making a countdown useful
A countdown converts an abstract future date into a number you can budget. Days-to-go divides naturally into preparation units: chapters per week before an exam, training runs before a race, sprints before a launch.
The weekday matters too — a deadline landing on a Sunday effectively moves to Friday, and a birthday on a Tuesday parties differently than one on a Saturday. That's why the calculator always tells you what day of the week your date falls on.

Does the countdown include today?
No — it counts full days remaining after today. If the event is tomorrow, the answer is 1. If it's today, you'll get a small celebration instead.
Why is the months figure approximate?
Months vary from 28 to 31 days, so any months figure for an arbitrary span is a convention. We divide by the average month length (30.44 days); the day count is the exact number.
