Formula used
Overtime is usually paid at a premium — commonly 1.5× (time-and-a-half) or 2× (double time). The regular hours are paid at the base rate; only the overtime hours get the multiplier applied.
Example calculation
20/hr, 40 regular + 8 overtime at 1.5×: regular = 800, overtime = 8 × 30 = 240, total = 1,040.
The 8 overtime hours earn 30/hr instead of 20 — worth 80 more than they would at the regular rate.
How overtime pay works
Overtime compensates for hours beyond a standard working week (or day) at a premium rate — most commonly time-and-a-half (1.5×), with double time (2×) for holidays or unsocial hours in some places. Only the extra hours attract the multiplier; your regular hours are paid at the base rate, so the calculation is two parts added together.
The details, though, are heavily jurisdiction-dependent. What counts as overtime (over 40 hours a week? over 8 a day?), the required multiplier, and crucially whether you're even eligible all vary by country and by employment category — many salaried and professional roles are exempt from overtime entirely. This calculator does the arithmetic once you know your rate and multiplier, but your contract and local employment law define the rules that feed into it.

Frequently asked questions
How is overtime pay calculated?
Regular hours are paid at your base rate; overtime hours are paid at the base rate times the multiplier (usually 1.5 for time-and-a-half). Add the two together. For 20/hr with 8 overtime hours at 1.5×, overtime pay is 8 × 30 = 240.
What is time-and-a-half?
An overtime rate of 1.5 times your regular hourly pay — the most common overtime premium. A 20/hr rate becomes 30/hr for overtime hours. Double time (2×) is sometimes paid for holidays or unsocial hours.
Am I entitled to overtime pay?
It depends on your country, contract and job category — rules on eligibility, thresholds and rates vary widely, and many salaried or professional roles are exempt. Check your employment contract and local labour law for the specifics.
