Ovulation Calculator (Fertile Window)
Estimate your ovulation day and fertile window from your last period and average cycle length. The fertile window spans about six days — the five before ovulation plus ovulation day itself.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the first day of your last period — not the last day.
- Enter your average cycle length (track 2–3 cycles for a good average).
- Press Calculate for your estimated ovulation day, fertile window and next period.
Formula used
The luteal phase (ovulation to period) is relatively fixed at ~14 days, while the pre-ovulation phase varies — so ovulation is counted back from the next period, not forward 14 days from the last. The fertile window is ovulation −5 to +1 days, matching sperm (up to 5 days) and egg (~24 h) lifespans.
Example calculation
Last period started 1 July, cycle 30 days: next period ≈ 31 July, so ovulation ≈ 31 July − 14 days = 17 July (cycle day 17), fertile window 12–18 July.
Note it's day 17, not day 14 — the "day 14" rule only fits 28-day cycles.
Understanding the fertile window
Conception is only possible in a narrow window: sperm survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus, the egg about one day after ovulation — six fertile days per cycle, with the two days before ovulation the most likely. Calendar math estimates that window from cycle length, anchored on the fairly constant 14-day luteal phase.
Its limits are real: ovulation shifts with stress, illness and travel even in regular cycles, and irregular cycles defeat calendar prediction entirely. Ovulation predictor kits (detecting the LH surge) and basal body temperature give day-level precision when it matters.
Why use this calculator?
- Time conception attempts around the six days that actually count.
- Correct the "day 14" myth for cycles longer or shorter than 28 days.
- Anticipate your next period for planning and tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this to avoid pregnancy?
No — calendar estimates are not reliable contraception. Ovulation timing varies cycle to cycle, and sperm survival stretches the risky window. Discuss effective contraception options with a healthcare provider.
When am I most fertile?
The two days before ovulation and ovulation day itself carry the highest conception probability. With a 28-day cycle that's roughly days 13–15; the calculator adjusts this for your cycle length.
My cycles are irregular — what should I do?
Calendar prediction won't be accurate. Use ovulation test strips (LH kits) or track basal body temperature and cervical mucus instead — and see a gynecologist if cycles vary widely or exceed 35–40 days, which can indicate treatable conditions.
