Formula used
Where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Your current grade contributes Current × (1 − w) points of the total; the final must supply the rest. Above 100% means the target is out of reach; at or below 0 means it's already locked.
Example calculation
Current 78%, target 80%, final worth 40%:
Locked in: 78 × 0.6 = 46.8 pts. Needed from final: 80 − 46.8 = 33.2 pts → 33.2 ÷ 0.4 = 83% on the final. For an A (90 overall) you'd need 108% — mathematically out of reach, so B+ is the realistic ceiling.
The math of finals week

What if the final replaces my lowest midterm?
