CGPA Calculator (Cumulative GPA)
Combine semester GPAs into your cumulative CGPA. Enter each semester's GPA and its credit load — the calculator weights them properly, which is why a plain average of SGPAs is usually slightly wrong.
How to use this calculator
- Enter each semester's GPA in order, comma-separated.
- Enter the credits each semester carried (empty = equal weighting).
- Press Calculate to get the true credit-weighted CGPA — compared against the naive average.
Formula used
Identical math to GPA, one level up: semesters play the role of courses. When all semesters carry equal credits, the weighted CGPA equals the simple average — otherwise they differ, and the weighted one is official.
Example calculation
SGPAs 8.2, 7.6, 8.8, 8.0 with credits 22, 24, 22, 24:
Weighted points = 180.4 + 182.4 + 193.6 + 192 = 748.4 → CGPA = 748.4 ÷ 92 = 8.13. The naive average is 8.15 — close here, but the gap grows when credit loads vary more.
SGPA, CGPA and how they connect
SGPA (semester grade point average) scores one term; CGPA accumulates all terms, weighted by credits. Because later semesters often carry different credit loads — labs, projects, thesis — the official CGPA is a weighted average, not the mean of your SGPAs.
CGPA is also the number recruiters and graduate schools read, so knowing exactly where you stand — and what the next semester must deliver to reach a target — turns an abstract goal into a concrete per-course plan.
Why use this calculator?
- Get the official credit-weighted CGPA, not the slightly-wrong naive average.
- Track your standing after every semester without waiting for the transcript.
- Plan target scenarios: test what next semester's SGPA does to your cumulative figure.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA covers a single semester; CGPA is the cumulative, credit-weighted average of all semesters so far. Your final degree CGPA is the one that appears on your transcript.
Why is my CGPA not the average of my SGPAs?
Because semesters carry different credits. A 24-credit semester influences the CGPA more than a 20-credit one, so the official calculation weights by credits — enter yours above to see the difference.
What SGPA do I need next semester to reach a target CGPA?
Rearrange the formula: required SGPA = (target × total future credits − current weighted points) ÷ next semester's credits. Add your target as a what-if semester above and adjust until the CGPA matches.
