Formula used
Pace (min/km) is speed inverted — lower is faster. The mile conversion multiplies km pace by 1.609. Even splits divide the race into equal-pace segments, the strategy behind most personal bests.
Example calculation
A 10K in 55:00: 3,300 s ÷ 10 = 330 s = 5:30 /km (8:51 /mile, 10.9 km/h).
Even splits: 5 km at 27:30, 10 km at 55:00 — cross halfway more than a minute fast and the finish usually collects the debt.
Pace, and why even splits win
Runners think in pace because it's directly actionable mid-race — your watch shows min/km, and target pace tells you instantly whether to ease off. Physiologically, even or slightly negative splits (second half marginally faster) produce the best times: starting too fast burns glycogen and accumulates fatigue that costs more later than the early seconds gained.
Pace also converts between race distances imperfectly — your 5K pace won't hold for a marathon. As a rough rule, each doubling of distance slows sustainable pace by about 6–8%.

What pace do I need for a sub-60 10K?
6:00 /km exactly — 60 minutes ÷ 10 km. For sub-50 it's 5:00 /km; a sub-2:00 half marathon needs 5:41 /km.
What is a good running pace for beginners?
Whatever lets you hold a conversation — typically 6:30–8:00 /km. Easy conversational pace builds the aerobic base; speed comes from consistency, not from forcing faster daily runs.
How do I predict my marathon time from a 10K?
A common estimate (Riegel formula) multiplies your time by (new distance ÷ old)^1.06 — a 55:00 10K predicts roughly a 4:13 marathon, assuming appropriate endurance training. Untrained distance costs more than the formula shows.
