How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your full name (the one you go by works too).
  2. Each letter is converted to a number, summed and reduced.
  3. Read your name number's traditional theme.

Formula used

Pythagorean: A=1…I=9, J=1…R=9, S=1…Z=8; sum all letters and reduce

The Pythagorean system maps each letter to 1–9 by its position (looping every nine letters). Sum the values of every letter in the name and reduce to a single digit, keeping master numbers 11, 22 and 33.

Example calculation

Worked example

ALEX: A=1, L=3, E=5, X=6 → sum 15 → 1+5 = 6, "Harmony".

Add a surname and the total changes — the full name gives your complete "expression number".

The number in your name

Name numerology assigns a number to your name — often called the "expression" or "destiny" number — by converting each letter to a digit and reducing the sum. The most common method is the Pythagorean system, which loops the alphabet through 1 to 9. The resulting number is said to describe your talents and character, complementing the life-path number that comes from your birth date.

As with all numerology, this is a belief system rather than a science: there's no evidence that the letters of a name shape who you are, and the trait descriptions are broad enough to feel personal to almost anyone. But it's a genuinely fun exercise — comparing the numbers of your full name, nickname and family members, or seeing how a name change shifts the result. Enjoy it as a playful, reflective lens, take the traits that resonate as food for thought, and hold the rest lightly.

Frequently asked questions

How is a name number calculated?

Using the Pythagorean system: each letter maps to a number 1–9 by its alphabet position (A=1 through I=9, then J=1 again), you sum all the letters, and reduce to a single digit — keeping master numbers 11, 22 and 33.

What's the difference between a name number and a life path number?

A name number (expression number) comes from the letters of your name; a life path number comes from your birth date. Numerology treats them as complementary — one for your character and talents, the other for your life's journey.

Is name numerology real?

No — it's a belief system, not science. There's no evidence that a name's letters determine personality. It's an entertaining, reflective lens best enjoyed as a game, much like a horoscope.
