Formula used
The 12 animals cycle by year (2020 was the Rat). Each pairs with one of five elements — Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth — cycling every two years, giving a 60-year grand cycle before an exact animal-element combination repeats.
Example calculation
1995: (1995 − 2020) mod 12 = 11 → Pig; last digit 5 → Wood. So a Wood Pig.
Someone born in January 1995 might actually be a Dog (1994's animal), since the 1995 lunar year began on 31 January.
The 12-year animal cycle
The Chinese zodiac (shēngxiào) assigns one of twelve animals to each year in a repeating cycle, deeply embedded in Chinese culture and celebrated each Lunar New Year. Why might my sign be the previous year's animal?
